Developed by Harvard psychiatrist Douglas Jacobs, MD, Stop
a Suicide Today! teaches you how to recognize the signs of suicide
in family members, friends and co-workers, and empowers you to make a
difference in the lives of your loved ones. It emphasizes the relationship
between suicide and mental illness and the notion that a key step in reducing
suicide is to get those in need into mental health treatment. Moreover,
Stop a Suicide Today! aims to make clear that the expression of
suicidal thoughts and behaviors is to be considered a medical emergency and
treated as such.
Screening for Mental
Health Inc. (SMH), is the non-profit organization that first introduced
the concept of large-scale mental health screenings in 1991 with its flagship
program National Depression Screening Day. SMH programs now include both in
person and online programs for depression, bipolar disorder, generalized
anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders, alcohol
problems, and suicide prevention. Its programs have been used by hospitals,
mental health centers, social service agencies, government agencies, older
adult facilities, primary care clinicians, colleges, high schools, corporations
and HMO’s, reaching individuals ranging from teens to older adults.
SMH’s programs have reduced the stigma that inhibits many individuals with
mental illness from seeking treatment. Teaching people how to identify mental
illness and specific ways to access treatment for themselves or a loved one is
the cornerstone of SMH’s programs.
The Suicide Education and Research Division of SMH educates the public on
warning signs of suicide, and professionals about the assessment and treatment
of suicidal individuals. Stop a Suicide Today!
is a program of the Suicide Education and Research Division.
Screening for Mental Health and its programs are supported by federal,
foundation and corporate grants, registration fees from participating
organizations, and donations from the public.
